My name is Nkululeko Ncube, a Johannesburg based Zimbabwean fashion designer. My brand is Ara Kani, and it’s a street Couture brand with mainly focused on Street Gothic Wear but branches out to all kinds of street wear.
I was born in Nkayi and grew up in Bulawayo. I did my primary education at Dimpamhiwa Primary school and high school at Njube High. After high school, I did a Pattern cutting course at Speciss College In Bulawayo.
In 2012 I started my brand which I called Rebellious Klothing. With the help of my friend and public relations person Gilmore Moyo I did my first fashion show, Clothing Indaba Bulawayo. I was already working with Moyo under his Hunnar Management Agency then, and we’ve been working together since. After Clothing Indaba I got my big break at the age of 21 and was chosen to be part of the first ever 3 Zimbabwean designers to do Durban Fashion Fair.
I’ve gone on to do Matabeleland Fashion Show(where I won best male designer) then HIFAshion. Last year I did SA Men’s Wear Week and Mozambique Fashion Week.
In 2015 I left Bulawayo for Johannesburg to try and grow Ara Kani seeing that the fashion industry in SA is bigger than Zim. The brand has been growing ever since and continued to grow.
Ara Kani offers Street Gothic Wear and Athleisure. We recently collaborated with another Zimbabwean Streetwear Brand called SKEIF to make an Athleisure collection, and we are working on getting it in stores in and around SA. Currently we are working on our website and online store, that way we get to reach more people.
Below are pictures of our latest collection SKEIF By Ara Kani.
